Ataturk is well known to older Australians but I don't know if younger ones are taught about him in schools these days. He might have been Australia's enemy ninety years ago but he is held in high regard and recognised as the founder of modern Turkey.

Unfortunately the Australian education system has badly neglected history in schools for a number of years. The good news is that I know quite a lot about Ataturk. An excellent and inspirational leader.

no, sorry.
But War Heros for Australians are more like Simpson, the man and his donkey.
He would carry wounded soldiers back to the hospital on the beach. He started like others, carrying a stretcher with another medic, but knew guys were waiting for an hour or more before a stretcher could get to where fighting was still going on. Too many died that way.
So he got a donkey and went into the kill zone to pick up the wounded.
To us, there was a hero that saved friends, not killed enemies.

I am sorry I don't know who Ataturk is. I studied Australian War History, but I am sure they glorify Australia and give us a bias view on it all. I will know read up on Ataturk so that I know a bit about him.

Hi I am really ashamed as I do not know anything about him. I am aware of the fighting that took place and the huge death toll on both sides. I am going to do some research and learn more about this man. Cheers.
