Is it because you can't grow them in your climate? Very curious as almost every English person I know is very into orange juice and orange flavored things.

Okay, I didn't in any way mean this question offensively, they just give a small space to ask it in! I don't think all british people like the same thing...I was just curious. And I do know a fair amount of English people, I worked for an English run company for years. It was just an observation. I'm sorry I asked.

I don't know, I much prefer pineapple juice, not as tart, and yet if you ask for it it's like asking for banana juice.....
Orange juice is bitter, and heavy..probably seen as exotic years ago, and now people are just so used to it, they don't question their preferences

Well, being a Brit, I can't say that I've ever heard that!

Now, I know as a mother it is full of vitamin c, and it's also one of the cheapest and most easily available of fruit juices.

Personally I don't drink it. As for anything else orange, yuck! Sweets, squash/cordial, lolly pops etc, won't touch them.

I don't know anybody that is mad about it. It is probably just that the people you know are in to it, rather than the whole population!

I grew up thinking Australians were in to it, mainly because in the programmes Neighbours and Home And Away, they were always asking for an oj in the diner! Now I'm sure I wouldn't assume that the whole nation stereotypically drinks it without fail :)

How many English people do you know? Out of interest.

I'm sure some of it comes from the post war era, where our Grandparents understood the nutritional value of fruit juice.

Lastly, we can grow oranges in this country (my mother has a small orange tree), and the south east of England has a pretty good climate for this sort of thing (including vines and palm trees). But we can't grow bananas, pineapples etc without a greenhouse environment. So perhaps the fact that it *can* be produced here is another reason it is apparently so popular? This would factor in it being cheaper to buy for a start, and in it being more easily available.

Apple juice is incredibly popular here too, and that is another fruit grown in Britain, and more commonly than oranges too, however it's not promoted as much for vitamins etc.

I don't think it's anything to do with it being seen as exotic these days!

EDIT: having just seen your additional info, I for one am certainly not offended! It's not a rude question in any way and shouldn't be seen like that. Don't be sorry you asked, if you're curious there is no other way to find out than asking the question :)

Maybe because everything else they serve for breakfast is nasty.. LOL I've never heard of that. I think a lot of people in the industrialized world enjoy orange juice. How many English people do you really know?

I can't drink fresh orange juice - gives me bad indigestion. There are a lot of brands of orange squash about (avoid giving them to you children though as they have sunset yellow-an e-number which sends children hyper).

As for orange sweets or chocolate - gross hate them. People eat marmalade too a kind of orange flavour jelly with orange peel(which is weird 'cos our jelly is your jello)

Because it's good for health and titillates our palate which has by long years become inured to food without zest.
