It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends at the Vigil on Holy Easter. Actually in calendar terms it consists of 46 days. There are 2 answers to why
1. The 6 sundays of Lent are not included as Sundays are always celebrations of the Lord's resurrection.
2. The first week of Lent in terms of the lectionary starts on the Sunday so there are 4 days less, then you'd have to say that the Maundy Thursday - Holy Saturday are in the season of passion tide, not in the tide of Lent.
40 in the Bible denotes a long time not an actual set amount of days or years, 3 days would imply a short time. So Israel was in the desert a long time and Jesus was in the desert for a long time but not in reality 40 days... etc..

What difference does it make? Lent is not a Christian observance. Coming from the Anglo-Saxon Lencten, meaning “spring,” Lent originated in the ancient Babylonian mystery religion. “The forty days’ abstinence of Lent was directly borrowed from the worshippers of the Babylonian goddess…Among the Pagans this Lent seems to have been an indispensable preliminary to the great annual festival in commemoration of the death and resurrection of Tammuz” (The Two Babylons).

God hates all pagan observances (Jer. 10:2-3; Lev. 18:3, 30; Deut. 7:1-5, 16). They cannot be “Christianized” or made clean by men. That includes Lent.

Today it Fat Tuesday (also called Shrove Tuesday, pancake Tuesday, mardi gras). So tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, and thus the first day of lent. Lent is 46 days, but since traditionally Sundays are not considered as days of penance, it is 40 days.. It ends on the morning of Easter Sunday, April 8th. Eat up today. I hope you have a good Lent this year...

Eastern Christiasn have already began Lent. They started yesterday on Ash Monday..

Lent runs from Ash Wednesday (March 1st) until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive on Holy Thursday (April 13th). The word Lent is taken from and old Anglo Saxon word—Lencten—meaning Spring, the season of more daylight and growth. Today Lent is a 40 day period of prayer, penance, and spiritual renewal in preparation for the celebration of Easter. Lent only finds its meaning in relationship to Easter—the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today, Lent has a twofold character; 1) a time to recall, or prepare for sacrament of Baptism; and 2) a time to perform acts of prayer and penance. Lent is then a collective retreat of 40 days, a time when one tries to live in the spirit of their Baptism, and a time of penance which brings about a change of heart—conversion.

February 21-April 6th

While it may have the religious meaning of sacrifice and self-examination today, fasting for such a long duration of time comes from the fact that, at this point in the year, the stores of food (in Europe) were pretty well empty.

It is a heathen custom. 40 days of weeping for Tammuz is how it started, see Ezekiel 8:14
