Boil the kettle. Put the water into the saucepan and bring back to a vigorous boil. Prick both ends of a fresh egg to prevent a messy cracking of egg shell.

Gently lower it into the water. Place a lid on top of the sauce pan and set the timer for 5 minutes.

Remove the egg from the water and put into an egg cup. By the time your toast is spread, your egg should be soft in the middle and the white should be set.

Some people would say put the egg in to cold water, but what is the point. Guaranteed, the water will start boiling while you are distracted with something else, and then you do not know how long the water has been boiling and by the time you get the timer set, more time will have elapsed and the kids will be screaming blue murder and then you forget the egg and then.........

It depends on the size of the egg and whether it has just come out of the fridge. Lakeland sell a really useful plastic gadget you put into the pan with cold water and the egg. It changes colour as the egg cooks and is graduated from soft to hard boiled.

The best way to boil eggs is to put them in a small pan covered with water. Get the water up to a boil, then remove from heat. Let eggs set in hot water for 17 minutes. If you want cold hard boiled eggs --- transfer to cold water for 15 minutes. This is the perfect hard boil egg.

It really, DOES depend, on a number of things, - such, as - how "RUNNY", do you WANT the egg, to BE, once it's cooked? Then, - and, perhaps, more IMPORTANTLY, - how LONG had the pan, been on the HEAT, before you placed the egg, INTO IT? Give the water at least FIVE minutes, to come to the BOIL, - THEN, put the egg in! Three to four mins, later, - VOILA, - BREAKFAST!

3 mins soft, 5 mins hard. Always put it into boiling water with a little salt added which will stop it leaking if the egg bursts.
