I always tell men the same thing - it's quite simply none of their business.
From a man's point of view, any partners before him is too many so it's best he doesn't have a solid number to get his head round in the first place.
Not only that but it really isn't anything to do with him what you got up to before he arrived on the scene. If he insists you tell him then he has issues that will probably rear their ugly head sooner or later in the form of insecurity or the need to control.
An air of mystery is always much better than telling all. This doesn't mean you're not being honest. Always be honest but don't feel that means you're inclined to reveal all. Have the confidence to say no when there's information you don't want to share.
In terms of how many partners is acceptable it doesn't matter so long as you feel comfortable with your own actions and are always safe.

I have to be honest I have only been asked this question a few of times, and I answered honestly both times. All of those times, though, it was not a serious relationship between me and the guy, so I did not really care what they might think.
However, I really do not think it matters all that much in a serious and loving relationship.
I don't really know how many is too many.........I guess it's up to each of us to decide that for themselves......I personally, do not have a number in mind, whatever it will be in the end, I'll be happy with it.
It is OK to have a lot of sexual partners, what is not OK,is to have unprotected sex with random people, it is simply not safe!

I don't believe a new partner has any right to know about initimate details of your past love life unless he/she is willing to be open and honest about their's also. At the end of the day it depends on your attitude to the matter and how you think your new man/woman will react to the info.
In terms of how many partners is too many... It's all relative!!! I'm 23, lost my virginity at 17 and have had somewhere in the region of 20-25 partners (truth be told, I stopped counting a while ago). Whereas a friend of mine who's the same age has had around 5. It varies according to circumstance.

The number of sexual partners all depend on your own vision and the way you see things, a certain amount my be enough for one but too much for another person

Yeah always 100% honest, if not then you are starting out a new relationship in a bad way. I think it depends on how old you are to how many partners is morally acceptable. If you are still in late teens then I think it is acceptable to have perhaps 1 or 2 in your 20's perhaps 3 or 4 but once your in your 30's I'd wonder why you weren't married, sorry I'm an old fashioned girl.

Honesty is absolutely the best policy. It's a sign of respect for your potential relationship. More importantly, I think you can gain valuable insight into each others sexual attitudes and therefore relationship patterns and compatibility. As for what is too much? As long as you are comfortable with your decisions in that arena and have taken the necessary precautions, then there is no number too little or too large.

Personally i wouldn't ask a person this question. If they asked me this question i can give them a written record of how many times i've had sex and how many different partners i've had. I've kept a journal on my exploits since my first time. 257 women are listed in my journal. I keep a running total of how many times i've actually had intercourse and that total as of February 19th, 2007 is: 12,411 times. I don't have any STD's and i get tested monthly. I use protection.

My past is my past and that is where it will stay until such time as the relationship has grown into a trusting and honest commitment between the two of us - been bitten once too often by over sharing ...
