I keep her outside on a chain during the day but inside with the family at night and worry about any males in the neighborhood getting close when she comes into heat. I don't want to breed yet.

Swelling is one sign. But it looks as though you are not a very responsible pet owner if you keep your poor dog on a chain.
It is very uncomfortable for them to be in heat and there are enough dogs dying to get a home. You need to go to a shelter for a week and watch the dogs being killed because there is not enough homes.
Do you realize that for every 1 person born, there are 7 puppies and kittens
born? At best, 1 will find a forever home.
And don't forget, that every "Free-to-good-home" litter takes homes away
from animals already at the shelter.

STOP letting your pets; or your friends, relatives or co-workers pets
contribute to the problem.
If you love animals, it is NOT ENOUGH to merely say "My pets are fixed".
Vow to educate and enable others to fix their pets too.
Spaying just 1 female dog or cat, will prevent 6 others from ending up in a
shelter the following year.
Please be part of the solution, NOT the problem!
Thank you. ^..^

Female dogs do go into heat about six months of age and the heat usually last for about three weeks. Depending on the dog. You will know it if she starts to lick her vulva a lot and if she seems to be wet, sometimes the dog will only discharge during her first heat as mine did when she had her first heat. Most of the time it involves some blood. And sometimes it is a lot of blood. The first week the dog is fairly safe from being impregnated by males as the last week is when she is the most fertile. And it's true that a male dog can smell a female in heat a mile away. Dogs have extremely sensitive sniffers and will follow their noses to a female who is ready for breeding. It's the pheromones they give off during their heat. Below are some links you might want to check out.

Bitches can take anywhere upto 2 years before they have their first season. Really she needs to be in a secure compound during the day if you can't have her in the house with you. Even if she is kept locked away but outside, when she comes into season she will attract males from miles around and you could have a big problem of male dogs hanging around your property for upto a month, possibly fighting each other.

She will start whining, drag herself across the floor and have her tail right up in the air showing her bum off. You will also have male dogs going off there heads trying to get to her. I'd keep her in the house for the duration of her season to stop dogs getting to her, and stand with her when you let her out to make sure they don't get at her then. I'd also sort some secure fencing out and a kennel so you don't have to keep her chained up and she's got shelter if she wants it.

There's one easy, simple solution to your problem: Get her spayed. She doesn't need the unnecessary stress of heat cycles.

And she really shouldn't be on a chain anyway. How would you like to be tied all day?

she should be coming into season just any time. if she does please do not leave her outside. if you are going to breed her she need to wait till she is 2 years old. if you are not going to breed her then i would have her spayed now.

ALL GOOD INFORMATION, BUT YOU CAN TELL IF SHE IS COMING INTO HEAT BY SWELLING. SHE WILL SWELL BACK THERE WHEN SHE IS COMING INTO HEAT , SHE WILL USUALLY STAY SWOLLEN IF SHE WAS BRED.
