A few months. You need to give them time to get over the last person they were with even though they were not together very long. They most likely aren't looking to date anyone new straight after the break up.

Well, in my opinion, don't ask her out until you know how attached she was. You don't strike me as the kind who is interested in being the "rebound man." If she's looking for an ego boost or a way to make him jealous, then you're just going to get used. Trying being a good friend, she'll appreciate it. Then when you're both comfortable with that and have built up a good trust system, take her out to lunch.

It really depends on the person, and what the situation was. Was that person hurt, or looking forward to leaving. That has a big part of when is OK to ask them on a date....
