Wear good shoes, stretch before and after, make sure you warm up properly, start slow then increase your pace so you dont burn out too quick, Set yourself a goal, like run to this street or that light post whatever, half way through try breaking your run up into short sprints like for 50 metres or 100 metres. Have fun, good luck and keep yourself hydrated!

First you need to know how much you and your friend can do. To do this, get a watch and time yourself.
Start by walking at a brisk pace and swinging arms as warm up. After about 3 minutes of this your heart should be going faster and your breathing deeper or faster too. Then, start at a slow moderate jog. Keep a rythm at which you can say a full sentence without gasping. Do it for as long as you can. If you can sustain the pace for about 30 minutes (wow!!) return to a brisk walk for a minute or two and then do some stretch exercises.
Now, rest for a day, and next day, repeat the abouve routine. If you could not do the 30 minutes (which would be the normal thing to happen), do a minute more running that you did last time, or (300 yards more). And the stretch again and take another day rest.
Repeat the process until you can sustain a 30 minute jog every other day, so you are running three times a week with rest days in between.
The important thing is not to over do it!! Specialy at first. Keep in mind that you have just a day to recuperate to go at it again, so be moderate about the effort you do.
The secret is keeping things under control to be able to do them again soon. Conditioning comes more from frecuency that from big heavy loads of effort that will leave you sore and in the need for days and days of rest.
You must enjoy the time you devote to exercise, it should not be torture, so keep it moderate. Results and good shape will be a matter of just some weeks, and you will continue to get fitter and fitter as weeks go by. So, do not over do it.
To help you sustain such a demanding effort, you must eat right. have a lot of vegetables, carbohydrates, and some protein.
If you avoid or cut on fatty foods and sugar, you will both look fantastic in no time!!

I am a soldier and I run 5 days out of the week I will say that these things are important.
1. Stay hydrated the day before and of the run.
a) Just drinking water may not be enough. I recommend to drink a combination of water and Gatorade/Powerade. That way the body replinishes nutrience that it needs.
2. Watch what you eat the night before a run, because if you eat junk it will effect your speed.
3. Get a great nights sleep before you run. You would be amazed at how much inadaquite or too much sleep can effect the run.
4. If you are a smoker and you are going to run...unless your body is used to it....try not to smoke before you run.
5. A Stretch Routine.
6. Warm up enough so as you will not hurt yourself during the run.
7. A cool down stretch routine. This will allow your body to cool down as well as restretch the used muscles. Otherwise you could easily pull those muscles later on that day.
8. Wear the appropriate clothing. If it is cold you do not want to bundle up too much because during the run the layers could cause you to pass out. On the other hand if it is cold and you do not wear enough of the right clothing you could get a cold weather injury.
9. Wear the appropriate shoes. You would not want to run in a pair of sandles or a pair of heels.
10. Maintain a pace that you can keep throughout the run. You do not want to go to fast or you could burn yourself out. If you are running at a slower pace, I would recommend that you go a further distance to maximize the calorie burning cardio.
Other things that I recommend that do not effect your run but will help out in the long run.
1. Wear bright or reflective clothing.
2. A relective belt or vest. This will allow people in vehicles to see you before you see them. At night time this will make you visible where as you would not normally be.
3. If you are running at night some sort of chem light (glow stick) will help make you more visible. If you can not find one, a birght flashlight should work.

Make sure you have the correct running shoes and warm up and stretch.
Start off slowly. When i started running in october i did to much to soon and didnt have the correct trainers which ended up with me being injured that i couldnt walk and its took ten weeks for my leg to get better and im still unable to run.
Its best to start off with a run walk programme.Have a look on www.runnersworld.co.uk there is all the information and training programmes you need to get started.Just go to the beginners section in the forum. Also www.coolrunning is a good website.
Good luck and also remember to cool down for 5 minutes after a run [slow walking]then do some more stretches.cool running website shows you some stretches to do.
