Living language is an evolving knowledge. I have heard numbers thrown around, ±6,000 is agreed upon. That number includes dialects.
Dialects are not actually new language, the Northern and Southern Chinese speak a common language, The Northern and Southern Americans have small nuances or dialects, but it is the same language.
One dialect is universally understood, Smiles,Laughter,Peace,Love these languages cross any petty borders or cultural divides.
