This is a matter of some debate! When I was still in the military, we would have regular drug and alcohol lectures. We learned about the study that suggested that red wine was good for you. That news was spread widely. However, what was not talked about was the study itself. The subjects were a group of very healthy French men, living in a very hilly part of France. They walked or cycled everywhere. They ate very healthy foods: manly vegetables, with olive oil for the fat, and so on. And, yes, they did drink red wine. So, people skipped the constant exercise and healthy eating, and concluded that it must be the red wine that was keeping them healthy. The study itself did not conclude that at all, but, that is what people read into it. OTOH, there is some evidence that alcohol itself, while a poison, my have some benefits in small amounts. It can be an anti-oxidant, which helps prevent cancer. And, studies have shown that light to moderate drinking, perhaps 1 drink a day or less, seems to result in people healthier than total non-drinkers. More alcohol than that, and the benefits disappear pretty quickly. And, the type of alcohol did not matter. Beer, for example, has the same nutrition as bread, with B vitamins. There are suggestions that red wine is better than white, but, only suggestions, and the difference, if it exists, would be pretty small. And, yes, one glass is plenty. In fact more seems to have the counter effect on your body.
