neither one is better than the other as an operating system.
now for preferences it is alot more complex. your very own should be the only way to choose on part of it. then there is the hardware factor, you will need atleast 1gig of ram 2 or 4 would be ideal.the 3d graphics vista can use would also make you sick with an onboard graphics card so you will have to buy a good one min.of 256mb but 512 or bigger preferable. so if you are wanting to use digital photo, video and music stuff go with vista if not go with xp. i pearsonally use (windows media center 2005 ) it is rigght in the middle of both vista and xp.

If you don't have a vista capable machine, then stick with XP. You don't have reason to upgrade to vista.

If you do have a vista capable machine, and XP can afford all of the functionality and what you need, then stick with XP.

If you have vista capable machine, and if you want a better visual, more eye candy, and want to spend more money to add more memory to your machine, and upgrade your software, then use vista. But I suggest to wait until microsoft releases vista service pack.

If you think XP security, turn on auto updater, and install every critical update. You can install a better third party firewall, anti virus and anti spyware too.

Depends what you want to use the PC for.
I would say Vista but for general use it is probally best to stick to XP as the cost and time of upgrading to Vista would not be worth it.
If you want to use your PC for Mutlimedia like Videos and Gaming purposes use Vista as it is far more advanced than XP

If you have a Duo Core computer, then Vista. Otherwise stick with XP.

Vista has much better security features (and future updates will likely remedy many of the problems), but without the processor strength it will bog the computer down.
