Do you mean dhobi? It comes from Hindi and means washing or laundry. A dhobi wallah was a laundry man. Dhobi itch is a tropical skin disease. The word came into English through the British army which was in India until independence and is still used in the British army today. I don't know if the Australian army uses it.
