Australia was founded by immigrants from England only 150 years ago..
Those immigrants have since caused the loss of some 50% of all species on the land.. and now Austrlaia faces a water shortage for its people since most rivers have been diverted to irrigate highly profitable agriculture.. most of which is expoerted at a premium and then Aussies eat low grade fruit and vege importated from the third world.. sad isnt it.. the myth that Aussies live in some utopia is just a myth.. the lucky country should be able to handle another 20 million people EASILY.. but due to the theft of land and waterways it can now barely sustain what it has..
If you refer ot other immigrants.. like from Asia and Europe.. thne know that without those immigrants Australia would still be sheering sheep for a living.. because it is those immigrants who created the Aussie culture.. 20 years ago.. Aussies didnt even know what olive oil was.. let alone a cappucino or a plate of pasta..
The immigration debate may have wings in USA since USA is in the middle of latin America.. but australia has only ever BENEFITED form its immigrants.. the immigrants did most of the hard yakka to build this joint!!

The planned levels for Non-humanitarian visas for 2006-2007 can be found at -- http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/20planning_a.htm.
The planned level for Humanitarian visas for 2006-2007 Programme is 13 000 new places for 2006-07. 6000 places have been allocated to the Refugee category, and a total of 7000 places have been made available to the SHP and to meet onshore protection needs. The regional focus of the programme in 2006-07 will remain on Africa, followed by the Middle East and South West Asia, with an increased focus on Asia. This reflects the resettlement priorities of the UNHCR.
The 2 programmes combined give a total of over 150,000 visas per annum.
On top of this there is temporary residence visas including student visas, working holiday visas and temporary business entry visas.
The Department of Immigration plans these numbers carefully and at present the system works well.

No more for a few years because we cant even water our people in many states especially QLD
wait til all the dams are built in the states because YUK i don't want recycled water in every state!! as it is I'LL have to move out of QLD because of it & need a state to go to lol
also far to many trees have been cut down to build houses
Australia needs to heal its land before we ruin it completely
too much damage has been done to it in the short 200 years
& its SHAME SHAME to all who have wrecked the rivers & land & killed off heaps of animals & made them extinct & thats more SHAME & the KOALA will be next if something isn't done

As many or as few as they want. I know we're being invaded here in the states and there are these stupid people that think just because there's some open spaces we should just fill them all up. They aren't thinking about growing food, water or anything. Left to them we'd be one huge concrete jungle. I know I wish they'd put a freeze on ours......it's totally out of control.
