Yes I have noticed this myself and in particular in areas that have suffered injury. I suspect because of this that it is the nervous system attempting to fix a problem with the muscle in question. Who knows it could also be, a test, the brain runs periodically like a fire drill, to make sure the muscles are responding to it. I watched my dog's eyelids twitch while she was sleeping and someone once said, she was dreaming. REM or rapid eye movement is at play when we dream and that of course is the brain at work so once again I believe it is the brain exercising controls of some degree perhaps to heal certain cells that have gone out, it stimulates them or replaces them or turns on a switch that gets them moving or living again.
Some day we may find out that this is the long sought after fountain of youth and like water coming up in that fountain it never stays at the same level but fluctuates, just like the twitch in the muscles, so long may you twitch and twitch on forever.

You probably have a potassium deficiency. You can get tabs at the Grocery store but they are only about 3%. Try eating lots of bananas and drinking OJ every day for about two weeks, I'll bet the twitches minimize or go away. Works for me.
