Hi I was taught that cats can't see the TV. And they see only black and white. But my current cat likes to watch the Discovery channel, particularly when birds and ocean critters are featured. Is he seeing the TV for real? I have a large TV set. He is on the edge of his seat and very much engaged. His eyes and face darting wherever the birds are flying. Is it okay to assume he is seeing the TV?

~Yes they can. Have you seen a cat sitting on top of the TV and swatting at things on the TV? How could they do that if they couldn't see it?
My deceased cat's favorite show was one where two dogs and a cat walked a long ways to get home, can't recall the name, possibly "Homeward Bound?" With all the animal noises in it.
Pets teach us silly stuff all the time, they're smarter than given credit for.~

Sure he can see the pictures on the TV screen. My cat loves nature shows, too. Especially the ones which show birds and lions. I also once had a cat who loved to watch basketball, and would try to smack the players on the screen. I've even heard that they have special videos for cats, featuring birds and fish. That's going a little too far, though.

Its not so much the TV he seeing its more like they see the movement on the screen and cats have an instinctive nature to notice and chase movement in some cases people have reported about cats jumping at the screen of their HDTVs when they watch a nature show because of the high picture quality they think its a window and that the birds or small animals they see are really in front of them

Sure they can. A friend of mine has a video of birds made just for cats. She puts a chair in front of the T.V. and the cat sits there and swats at the screen when a bird flies by it. It is cute to watch.

Yes, they can. My cat likes to watch car races and tries to swat the cars as they pass the screen. He keeps looking around the side and back of the TV to try to find out where the cars went.

Not too bright, my cat.

Hi..

Cats can definitely see TV, & even watch some stuff & be interested.. as for the black & white thing: it's true... but in addition to black & white, cats also see certain shades of red, purple, & orange.
