I am wondering what I can do about this. My son is 15 months old. When he misbehaves and we raise our voice or change our tone he starts screaming, crying, and hitting himself in the head. Why would he do this?

My niece does this when being told off as well.
What normally happens when he falls over/gets hurt? You comfort him and reassure him... So, when he doesn't want you telling him off, he hurts himself in hopes that you'll stop it and give him a hug.
Just tell him a firm NO when he does it and give him 'time out' until he calms down.

Our daughter is also 15 months old. Because she isn't talking yet, she has created her own elaborate sign language. I imagine your son is hitting his head because he is trying to communicate something to you that he can't express with words. If I were in your situation, I would model repeatedly a new sign for being upset both when you're upset and when he's upset. When he sees that there is another, more positive, way of reacting to being upset, he may change his behavior.

My guess would be that he will keep on doing this because of the attention he gets when he does. Off course you'll worry about it, but try for a week or two to completely ignore him when he behaves like this, then carry on as normal with him when he stops. Don't even mention it when you interact with him again, because he'll know that you do notice, and it is serving a purpose. You're gonna have to get everybody to behave the same towards him when he does this though, mom, dad, grandparents, siblings, nursery - else it's not going to work. Good luck though, it must be hard for you to see him hurting himself.

My son went through the same thing at time-out. I don't know what causes it, and I don't know where they learn it, but it's not uncommon. We tried telling him that it's not ok to hit. We tried punishing him longer because he was still misbehaving by hitting himself. We tried reasoning with him. We tried ignoring it. Nothing really did it. He just grew out of it. You may just have to ride this one out. If he's really hurting himself, call the pediatrician and see if they have any tips. They've heard it all and know of lots of safe effective ways to curb behavior.

my sister had the same sort of problem with her little girl only my niece would pinch herself and bite herself. the doctor couldn't understand why she really did this but he did say it was most likely a way to get a different attention to the one where the are in trouble. she eventually grew out of it and now she id perfectly alright. good luck with your son.

my 18 month old daughter keeps hitting her head on the floor when she doesnt get her own way everyone keeps telling me its just a phase but its still worrying at least i now know im not alone thanks for the question

my son use to bang his head on the wall when he was that age, he stopped doing it eventualy.dont worry about it.

Has he been badly beaten, mistreated, abused? Check with your nany, put a hidden camera, she beats him.
