and he is looking for ways to show his commitment to her so that they both feel more secure- has anyone got any ideas so i can advise him?

Hi,my husband has had to work aboard as theres no work here for him.Its is all based on mutual trust.If he does not trust her then sorry the relationship is doomed.What if he asked her to marry him.Good luck to the both of them & you are a good friend to care enough to ask for advice on his behalf.

well done to you for wanting to help your friend.
I would say that making somekind of regular contact would help them feel secure, knowing that their partner is thinking of them. either frequent short fone calls , regular little postal notes or even keep an e-mail diary.. something that will be on record until either of them can catch up.
If they really are committed they will survive.

My hubby works away alot and we just trust each other and he rings every night to see how things are going and to let me know how his day has been.
Maybe he could send her a card and a small gift to surprise her one day. Small jester are always good.
