if your running xp then boot from cd and choose repair windows installation and it should fix the problem,as with any version of ms windows the key to keeping running and not losing data is a good backup routine, you can once you have installed everything add a second hard drive and use a software such as paragon drive back to make an image of your hard drive onto a second drive,if you have a problem then you can change the drives over and then add your files from your backups and you will be back to normal in no time.the blue screen will not just appear for no reason its susally caused by hardware changes or from missing software components when you remove something wrongly.i have known many people experience this after using hard drive file cleaning programs and not fully understanding what they are removing,if you want a drive cleaning utility use one such as the ashampoo winoptimiser suite, leaving everything set to default it is good and safe for every day users.

I think this problem refers to a missed component in the OS, there's no need to format your system drive and lose your data, you can perform a repair for the system, I think you know how to do, If the blue screen presists try another RAM, otherwise the problem will be the main board.

Man, i get this too, and i cant load up my computer so i have to reformat and reinstall OS. It will fix the problem, but in a few months it may pop up at random again. i have no idea how to fix it. I live in constant fear of it happening to me again. It could strike at any time *runs out of room screaming*. theres ur first reasonable answer :P
