I've been watching a lot of boxing and I can't figure out how a man can take a punch to the jaw and still stand, because if I so much as tap my jaw with my fist it hurts a lot. Do men have more muscle or fat layering on their jaw to take the punch? How do they train themselves not to be effected by the pain? Thanks.

There's a lot of things a fighter does to be able to withstand a punch to the jaw, the absolute best example of this is if you get your hands on any video of Roberto Duran, or you can youtube him and see what comes up. Roberto would turn his head with the punch, he would time the punch perfectly and turn his head at the last second in the opposite direction of the punch, it would look like he got cracked with this devestating shot but it would just be a walk in the park for Roberto.

Some fighters can just take a shot, I must admit there's no longevity in ones career if he/she takes too many of these shots. And there's other fighters than can stay just on the end of another fighters punch.

All of the above come from experience it takes a lot of training to do this and do this well.

Thanks for the question.

boxers are conditioned to take punches. although it hurts, usually if you can punches coming, then you can take them, but its the ones you don't see that hurt you. i don't know if you know him but ricardo mayorga would used to drop his hands, stick his chin out, and let the other fighter punch him. it was stupid but it would get into the head of the other fighter because he knew, even with free shots he couldn't hurt mayorga. mayorga doesn't do this anymore though because his fight felix trinidad pretty much ruined his ability to take punches. also, you can train to roll with punches so the full impact doesn't hit you full force on the chin. also theres a mental toughness that goes with it.

Adrenaline of being in a fight helps but the real idea is to not get hit there.

they are effected by the pain. first off they are stupid for wanting to fight and get hurt. sometimes the punches arent as hard as other. sometimes the man getting hit is to stupid to realize that it hurts. have you ever seen a boxer 15 years later. dumb
