OH, HELLO---there is no such thing as "reading the newspaper peacefully" when your cat is around. They want to be the center of attention, and they also LOVE to play on/with newspapers. Not only that, but they are super-smart, and check this out---just find an article in the newspaper that holds your interest and start reading. You may get a few sentences in before your cat can "hone-in" on EXACTLY where you are reading, and he/she will lie down, roll around, do all kinds of antics right where you are trying to read----works every time! MY only solution to this is to NOT spread the newspaper out on the table, but fold the thing up to where the article is that you are reading, and hold the newspaper in your hands or on your lap. "Kittie" won't have any fun with this method, as they want the entire area to "perform" (and to block your view from what you are trying to read) 'cause they want YOUR attention, and they are going to get it one way or another. Happy reading! A typical "cat thing"

In my home, newspapers are a good pouncing game. On line news are good too, for chasing the pointer.
I often wonder if columnists have pondered that some of their prose generates more reactions in cats than readers. Is the Telegraph more pounced than the Times ? What about the Herald, does it get more shredding than the Independant ? Who's most slept and purred over ? Hmm, have I just identified a field of study for the dedicated scientist ?

Set up a decoy paper. Open yesterday's paper and pretend to be really interested in it. Acting skills are important here, as cats know when they are being tricked. Then, when the cat has taken the bait and made themselves comfortable, you can pull out that days' paper and read in peace. Works for me.

No! Every single cat I've come across likes sitting in the middle of your newspaper more than anything else in the world. Why??!

Not often - I know what you mean.
What is it about cats that make them want to get in the way if you're reading a paper? Watching TV is the same; my cat always gets in the way. He's not interested in the computer luckily, though I know people whose cats seem to want to learn to type.

nope - even if i lift the paper up so the cats can sit on my lap, they will climb onto the back of the sofa and "dive bomb" the paper until a give up.
however i have found that if a feed them just before i try and read the paper then they will leave me alone for all of 10 minutes!!
