ive heard that they are extremely loyal and protective of their family and can be friendly if you train them correctly. if you train them to be aggressive they just might kill someone. its all in the training.

In my experience, there are "mean" dogs of any breed, and I would be more likely to bring a dog that was all or part "pit" or rottie into my house than a cocker spaniel. Cockers get mean when they get old. Or God forbid a little yappy dog. LOL They bite much more quickly than a larger dog. Not that all of them are bad either, they just don't appeal to me. The dogs I've known that have been breeds that are considered agressive haven't been that way unless they have been MADE that way. For several years, the stats have been released, and more people are bitten, per year, by Cockerspaniels than any other breed of dog in the US. The other thing, dogs are animals, and I don't ever forget that. IWHen my children were smaller, I never left them in the room alone with the dog, or the cat, for that matter. Animals may be pets, but they are still animals. And no matter how much I love my animals, my kids are my first priority.

Probably the majority are friendly if treated well. Dog temperament normally has to do with both environment and heredity. Around 12 weeks of age is a major time in a pups life and a lot of what happens at that time has a huge influence on how they grow up.
One mistake people make with pit bulls is tying them up. I believe they should be contained, without a doubt. But tying a dog up for long periods can cause aggression. Now, Pit lovers are going to pound me for my next sentences. (And yes, I know there are responsible Pitt owners.) There have been more Pit Bull attacks in America ,both on people and dogs, than any other breed. More than enough of these has resulted in deaths. My suggestion is to spay/neuter the whole breed. If that makes me ignorant then so be it.

The truth about Pit Bulls;
There are an estimated 4.8 million registered APBT and at least that many unregister ones in this country. They have been bred for many reasons, yes some for the use in the pits for fighting, many more have been train for championship dog shows, agility, pulling, police work, detection, therapy dogs ,SAR and service dogs for the handicapped.
APBT have never been bred for human aggression. These dogs, like all other breeds are not born inherently mean or bad. They can, like any other breed, become mean through lack of training, abuse, neglect and irresponsible ownership and breeding. Also like a number of other breeds are subjected t6o rage syndrom. I brain dysfunction thought to be caused by inbreeding,
APBT do not have locking jaws; the jaws of an APBT is identical to any other dog of a similar size.
Did you know that APBT consistently rate higher in the American Temperament Society’s tests every year than many common “family” dogs?
Average Rating of all Breeds in this study: 81.0%
Cardigan Welsh Corgi 76.8%
Shih Tzu 76.9%
Old English Sheepdog 77.8%
Beagle 78.2%
Cocker Spaniel 81.5%
Rottweiler 82.3%
Golden Retriever 83.2%
American Pit Bull Terrier 83.4%
Mixed Breed 85.1%
This is just a small list You can see the entire list on their web site, www.atts.org.
The U.S. custom Service recruits Pit Bulls from shelters to train in detection. One of their all time dogs is Popsicle, who was rescued from a freezer during a drug raid. Popsicle currently has the highest money bust than any other dog to date. One of the top-rated Search & Rescue teams in the U.S. is Kristine Crawford’s APBT Dakota. Kris as two other SAR pit Bulls! They were hand picked by NASA to aid in the recovery of the Astronauts from the Columbia Disaster. They were also involved in the Laci Paterson search and have saved a number of people lost in the wild. With all the good work these Pit Bulls have done they have still been attacked by people, even while they were working in their red vest, because they are pit bulls. A great web site www.forpitsake.org is a good place to learn about these three heros and other hero pit bulls.
There are many Pit Bulls who are productive members of society. Trained to be service dogs, therapy assistants, educational dogs, narcotics detection, actors, SAR and more. Many have become public heros saving peoples lives.

Some localities have laws forbidding ownership of these dogs, Dade County Florida is one in particular.
Very aggressive nature, loyal, strong as an ox, and most of them are OK as long as they don't get together with other pitbulls, then they are very likely to 'pack attack' anything they see as vulnerable.
Sadly there are quite a few human deaths, especially children, due to pitbull attacks. One such death occurred in my city just last week.

The correct name is Amercian Pit Bull Terrier.
Many well bred Pitties are sweet, kinda like marshmellows. They are, to my understanding, very people oriented and friendly. They're powerfully built, but the whole lock-jaw crap is just that . . . crap.
They were never bred for human agression, only dog. It all comes down to it's training. You train it to be human agressive, that's what you're going to get. Just like any other dog.
And it's so funny. Humans are the morons who bred them to fight each other, and now most of our race call for them to murdered because of what WE bred for.

sorry to say dude but the pit's rep is a man made rep if it wernt for us humans than Pitt's wouldn't have such a bad rep!! my experience of Pitt's is they are nice and friendly dogs but have the potentall to do harm like any other dog. but if its brought up properly than there shouldn't be any problems.

Rude or friendly? Well it depends on the dogs bloodline. They have strong jaws and some people use them for dog fight. They have no papers unlike other hi-breed dogs.

Part of their nature depends on how they are raised. However, their tendency is toward being unpredictable and aggressive.
I have a friend who has a wonderful pitbull, but even she admits that she has to watch her carefully when there are kids nearby... and even my friend knows to be careful with her dog's nose... he is sensitive about being touched on the nose...
