What your friend is experiencing is true and it is fairly common. It primarily has to do with sleep patterns of the brain. In sleep you have decreased levels of consciousness and decreased levels of motor control. Usually these are suppressed simultaneously... but not always. There can be a "state" where you're almost asleep. Your level of consciousness is severely suppressed but you have some conscious thought process and awareness of your surroundings. But your MOTOR or muscle function is still completely suppressed. These states are usually while falling asleep or waking up. It can induce almost a state of panic as you try multiple things to "wake yourself up." Some people report it as an "out of body experience" It's not dangerous and as far as I know, there is no treatment other that adequate and proper sleep patterns.

Drugs certainly can exacerbate and amplify this experience.

Usually persons have this type of experience when they are near death and close to leaving this dimension or life we live in. The fact that you talk as if it happens more than once, this person could be playing with death and fascinated by the morbid. In truth, it does happen to real people when they are near death and are blessed to come back and live longer. Many report seeing their bodies and describe the room and people there and what was being said and from a view that could not have been in their body. One such person was my mother who nearly perished from a crushed hip and when the surgeon had her opened up, she said she left her body and began walking away with someone and she looked down at her hip and it was a big black gaping hole and then she was on a beach walking with this someone and next thing she was back in her body. Her doctor confirmed the sight she saw as correct about what her hip looked like. He was troubled too to hear of it happening while he was working frantically to keep her alive. Many dynamics there.

If your friend is doing this on purpose, she could be in great danger. One time she might not return to her body and her chances to mend her ways will all be gone. Hoping you can influence her for the best and a better life.

Well wishes.
