Gas mileage concern and Jeeps don't normally go together.

Here's some random thoughts.
Compared to the Cherokee:
The Grand Cherokee is ~500# heavier
4.0 motor: the 42RE Transmission is considered inferior to the AW4 of your Cherokee.
A little more aerodynamic
Owners report 13 - 23 highway mpg
Consider only if it has an auxiliary transmission cooler, key to exceeding 150k on the TorqueFlight Transmissions.
Bonus if it has 3.73 gearing as this makes the Dana30/35 differentials stronger.

96-98 models brought many improvements over the 94:
OBDII; 4 wheel Disc Brakes; improved fuel injection;...
Steer clear of full-time 4x4 (NP249) unless you don't mind repairing both the transfer case and transmission.

I truthfully have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; regardless of the undeniable fact that that's a 6 cylinder. i'm getting approximately 19-21 in the city and 24-26 on the line. i'd think of a V8 would get incredibly under what I adventure. i admire my Grand Cherokee. that is been exciting to force and extremely sturdy. in case you're growing to be to be a sturdy deal, i'd say, "choose for it!"

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a littler bigger than the Standard Cherokee's were. So gas mileage is going to be a bit lower, but if you get a grand cherokee get the 4.0L Inline 6 engine as the V8's are terrible on gas. My 96 grand cherokee averages 26-28MPG with the 4.0 liter engine. Great in the snow too. And fun offroad.

Yes, all Jeeps are good idea's. But beware the 1993-1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ is plagued with electrical problems. But, if you are willing to work with it and be patient, it will be worth it.
Jeeps are vehicles that are great now matter how bad they look or how bad the previous owner took care of them. They are like any other car, it depends on the driver/owner to take care of them. They are not indestructible as some people act.
I own about two dozen different Jeep models. Not all are street legal yet, but that is my hobby. Repairing Jeeps and tracking down parts. That is what makes it fun. My Jeeps range in years from 1967-2000. I love each one of them and would not sell them for anything.
Good luck and remember to give us "The Wave"
