I was out to lunch with someone and when we went to pay our bill, the waitress told us that people at another table had paid for our meal. We never found out who it was, but I've always hoped that deed returned help to them somehow.

We don't help people so that they can call us God. Neither must we expect any aid from others. We are thaught to help others (provided we are in a position to help them. You can't offer someone money if you don't have any) and struggle on our own for our jobs. If someone helps you well and good, if nobody does - no problem...
Your question suggest more of a business rather than help. Give and take, to be more precise. If you expect others to help you in return for your help then you don't understand the definition of help...

Material help if we get is for selfish reasons. Same way if we proclaim to be helping others is also for selfish reasons. It can be for a thing in return, or fame or showing one upmanship or for holier than thou image. It can never be for selfless service- Impossible.
I am discussing spiritual way here and not the religious way that's why my answer may sound odd here.
However one should continue working for others without letting others know and without feeling as if you are doing something good. When you feel that you are doing something good your soul is not amused! And mind you we should do everything for the satisfaction of our soul.

it is said to help every one...u should be able to judge ur self and lead for help
there are many fake and tricky persons who pretend in need of help ,spot those people and help the one in pain
