obviously, it is the muscles and nerves in our "buttocks" that can tell the difference between a gas and a solid.
The nerves know when its gas, and the muscles tell when it is solid.

without going into too much detail in anatomy and physiology, in order to defecate it involves both voluntary and involuntary controls. You voluntarily create a larger opening for the feces to come out of. Gases are small particles and do not require much area to be released therefore the difference in size is the key. so In other words: size DOES matter.
