AVG: bar none. It's FREE version for home PC users, offers FREE updates and impressive protection; something the overly popular anti-virus scanner guys CHARGE people for.

Yes, AVG does offer for sale advanced home and business anti-virus scanners, but for me--I'm quite happy w/ the FREE version, feeling people online should NOT have to pay for protections when scummy spammers and hackers PAY NOTHING to try infecting your PC with their garbage.

AVG Free edition is somewhat hard to find....but it's there

In my opinion:

Norton - Most viruses are targeted at getting through Norton and takes WAY too much resources which slows your whole computer down. Because viruses are targeted at getting through Norton, sometimes it isn't very effective.

McAfee: Fairly effective, fairly fast but is just as bad as Norton when it comes to resource hogging.

AVG Free: Very light, free and very effective.
