We looking to chill out, also do some shopping and cafe sitting - not surfing. Also, we want a cute cottage to rent not a resort or apartment.

Definitely head north toward the Sunshine Coast rather than the Gold Coast, which is overdeveloped and basically horrible.

It depends whether you want just an idyllic spot or a nice surf beach. Frankly, all the best surf beaches have been "found" many years ago and so will generally be busy all the time. My pick would be to head for Coolum. The beach is great, plus it has the Sol Bar, one of the best night spots on the Sunshine Coast, and still retains that small coastal town vibe.

Kings Beach Caloundra has good surf, as does The Spit, Mooloolaba, but both get very busy. Happy Valley in Caloundra is a nice quiet spot to swim and have a bbq by the water, but the surf is rubbish.

Bribie Island has some of the nicest quite spots, and the beaches are really nice. If you got to either the sunshine or gold coasts it can get quite busy. Nudgee beach is not really a beach so I would not recommend it. Redcliffe has some nice spots also but also some muddy spots you would have to ask which spot to head towards.

I like Peregian and Marcus Beaches on the Sunshine Coast, a bit south of Noosa. A tad more than an hour from Brisbane, but undeveloped and uncrowded.

Try anything north towards the Sunshine Coast rather than south towards the Gold Coast.

lol Nudgee Beach I take my dog there, you cant even swim there because the tide seems to be always out and there heaps of jelly fish. I like Coolangatta its not overly developed and it such a nice beach and pretty relaxed compared to the Gold Coast.
