If that is the case rice farmers from Thailand to Arkansas probably wish that rice-eating birds blew up; but to put it simply, they don't. The fact is, nuptial rice poses no more danger to birds than combining pop rocks and soda does to kids. However it can cause a threat to elderly people that walk on it. Believe it or not they can fall.(older woman it heels). Just ask the church and see what they say. Some have a rule against it others don't.

"this is a fable. there is not any reason birds, which includes small songbirds, can no longer consume rice," reported Ned Johnson, a professor of biology at Berkeley who lectures many times on the nutrition and feeding of birds. Many churchs and reception halls have guidelines prohibiting the throwing of confetti or rice. those guidelines artwork to maintain the valuables sparkling so as that the subsequent happy couple does not get its deliver-off amid the leavings of the previous pair. Confetti is notoriously perplexing to freshen up; no longer even vacuuming a backyard will return the grass to its pristine situation. Rice poses a special danger. to no longer birds, nevertheless; to human beings. Scattered on a perplexing floor (such because of the fact the stairs of a church or a dance floor) it places everybody who walks in the time of that floor in danger of taking a bad spill. far greater ideal to ban rice throwing at a marriage than to finally end up with an injured visitor. do no longer do it for the birds, do it for the inlaws.

It poses a safety hazard and that's why it's prohibited. When the rice falls on the side walk it can cause people to slip and fall and that's the biggest reason why many venues won't allow it and some won't allow birdseed for the same reason. It's also messy and someone has to clean it up, with that person usually not a member of the wedding party.
Rice does not hurt the birds. It will not cause them to "explode."

It is not so much the throwing of the rice that is prohibited as the fact that it falls on the ground and can become a hazard, especially when it falls on floors and sidewalks. Since the rice is round, it will roll when stepped on, so people can fall. Even without the hazardous problem, it is just something else to clean up. For my in-laws 50th anniversary, we knew we couldn't throw rice, but we erroneously thought that bird seed was okay since the birds would eat what fell to the ground. However, we had to clean up what was on the floors and sidewalks because it, too, could cause falls. For my brother-in-law's wedding, we used bubbles. Each of the guests was given a small bottle of suds and a round wand. I have also heard of rose (or other flower) petals being used.

NO NO NO NO NO people!
The rice does not kill birds! If that were the case, it would be raining dead birds from all the garbage they eat off the streets.
Throwing rice is generally prohibited because it makes a big mess, and who gets to clean it up? The city. And then, if it's not cleaned up, you have the possibility of totally innocent bystanders getting attacked by divebombing birds trying to get at the great mounds of rice left by your wedding party.

There are two reasons: First because you are throwing "food" and the world is "hungry" Remember you are in a Church.
The second is that when you throw it it goes inside the floor and with the rain it may grow a plant and can damage the floor.
Those were the answers that a Priest told me.
You can throw soap bubbles, and means prosperity as rice.

Like a lot of people were saying if rice is tossed it will fall on the ground and the birds will eat it and it will swell in their stomachs causing them to die. Use Bubbles they are cheap and don't make a mess that has to be cleaned up later

The birds eat the rice and then die. They can not digest it. See if you can launch white balloons or throw bird seed. If they still say no to the bird seed ask how much for the clean up because that is the real issue.

Because dry rice will be eaten by birds who will then die because the rice expands in their stomachs and kill them. It is now a common place to throw birdseed at weddings.
