I must be doing something wrong. I donwloaded a film from internet for first time using the file sharing software of livewire. It worked. However, I am trying to burn it onto a DVD that I can play in my DVD machine and therefore watch on tv. But the DVD machine keeps giving the message unknown disc.

Where am I going wrong. Is it the way in which I am downloading (I think it was an MPEG file), is it the way I am burning or even the type of disc I using to burn?

Ok. Firstly some dvd players will only play certain types of disc.
Eg - mine will play DVD+R DVD+RW and DVD-Rom, but not any kind of DVD-

So are you using the correct format of disc.

Secondly, a dvd player wont just play MPEGS. Im guessing the file is about 750mb. if it was a ture DVD it would be 4.2Gb (4200mb) and would most probably be in ISO format.

The acutall files on a DVD are .VOB's. If you have a MPEG and want to watch as a DVD, you first need to render (convert) the MPEG to VOB.
Use a program like Pinnacle or Nero to do this. You can also add menus and things too.

Finally, scrap limewire, its crap. Use Bitcomet, and search for film ISO's eg thedepated.iso The file you are seaching for needs to be about 4.2gb to be a dvd. Once downloaded as an iso, just drag onto nero and it will burn the full disc with menus, and features, subtitles etc.

Some dvd players only read Dvd-r and some read dvd+r. While others like mine will read all of them. You may also have to convert it to another format besides the mpeg if your dvd doesn't accept it or you could just have a bad disk. Narrow it down then you will have the answer. Try it in another dvd player if you have one. If it works on that dvd player then you know your other dvd player takes the other type of dvd disk (-R) or (+R)

alot of DVD home Decks prefer DVD+R media, opposingly most computer users take the Easy road of burning with DVD-R
the industry thought ahead on that one huh. Make shure the + or - match. Regions also matter but i'm shure you didn't buy you DVDs in china.

Another thief. For the love of God will you not Download films!!! it's a criminal offence, you will eventually be issued with a massive fine. Are you crazy to even list a question like that so publicly? Buy the films they cost next to nothing!, that way you will appreciate the movies better. I can't wait for the government to launch their new campaign against piracy. All of you who download are in for a shock. :(
