I personally chose a doctor because I worried about what would happen if something went wrong, but this is a very personal choice. My sister had a midwife for both her pregnancies and loved it. My recommendation would be to interview potential midwives/doctors and come up with the decision that works best for your personal needs.

First of all the person who said anybody can walk off the street and become a midwife is wrong. My midwife is a Certified Nurse Midwife who works in a hospital has alot of medical training (nursing school then special certification in midwifery). And for those who are worried about complications, They wont even take your case if there are complications. My midwife is "supervised" by doctors and if complications do arise the doctor will just takeover. You are not just hung out to dry!!
I like the midwife because its alittle more personal but I have nothing against doctors. I really like the fact that my midwife clinic is at the hospital where I work so the appts are very convenient.

I have two children, a nine year old son and a seven year old daughter. With him I had a MD, and with her, a midwife. I wish I would have chosen a midwife with him as well. She was great! She knew the answer to all my questions, she took the time to listen to any concerns,no matter how minor, and she was gentle and understanding during the entire process. The MD was on the other side of the coin, curt, hurried, accurate but matter of fact. I would much rather someone who genuinely cares. Not to mention a midwife normally works under a MD in case of unexpected complications, so that concern shouldn't even exist.

Any guy or girl off the street can become a midwife or doula as long as they pass a certification, but a doctor is a doctor. They are trained to handle the complications that can occur with mom and baby during labor and delivery. I wouldn't want anything but the most highly trained professional in the room when my child or children is born. Also, keep in mind that nurses actually do much of the work anyways and the doctor is there to take care of the unexpected.

I think I would choose both. I would want a midwife to birth the baby, but a doctor close just in case there are any complications.

Midwife because she stays with you the whole time and is there the whole time for whatever you need.
Where I’m from midwives also have hospital privileges, so I can have a hospital birth with a midwife.

I would rather go for a doctor because a doctor has more training and can do necessary procedures if needed whereas a midwife can't do nothing but call 911.

i would chose a Dr
the Dr will be in a hospital and if anything goes wrong all the equipment they will need it right there and i will not have to worry if my baby will be OK or not
my first child had to be a c section (her head was to big for the birth canal
they thought my 2 would have to be c section (thank god she wasn't )
my 3-4 children where preemies about a month early
my 5 was OK no problems
