I agree, when you are helping someone out and they're just yapping away on their phone that's rude! I also hate it when I'm talking to someone, their cell phone goes off, and they'll start a conversation with whoever called them without even saying a simple 'one moment' or 'sorry' to me! They just completely seem to forget they were already talking to me... my boss will do that and sometimes he'll even walk off with the cell phone on his ear, not even acknowledging me or whoever else he was talking to with as much as a glance. When other people do that I'll walk out on them or tell them 'hey, we were talking, put down that phone' but with the boss it's a bit more difficult of course :(

Technically it's not as rude as some other things people do, but it does make you feel uncomfortable when the person you're supposed to be spending time with goes on jabbering over the cell phone whether it's an important matter or not. You tend to feel ignored and don't know what to do with yourself if it drags on, because you can't even focus on your companion because it would seem like you're intruding. Yet you can't pretend not to be listening in. And when they decide to tell you what they were talking about, it becomes even more awkward because you can't say 'I know, I was listening'.
It becomes particularly embarassing when your companion moves away out of earshot, so that you can't listen. What are you supposed to do with yourself then? lol.. *roll eyes*. This is how I tend to react probably because I don't use a cell phone as much as my friends do. People might not be rude on purpose but it certainly does make it look so. And, it's damn awkward!

It is yet another distraction. People are either rude, or not. If they are, it is just another medium for them to be rude. If they are not, one might never even know that they have a phone. Before the phones, way back in the day, people would just blatantly ignore others. It is not the phone, I assure you. People just don't obey social stigmas as much. We are all getting WAAAY too self-righteous for our own goods. Some people think that they deserve a sense of accomplishment and entitlement simply for being born. Alot of people also seem to confuse others for machines, such as cashiers. They interface with them the same way that they would with an ATM.
Parents need to teach their children that manners are not just saying "please" and "thank-you". They should teach their kids how to speak in public, how to address authority, how to earn respect, and so on and so forth.
I also miss table manners.......
Sorry about this rant........

She was very rude and discourteous to her date. If she had an emergency and needed to talk on her cell, then she should have gotten up and gone outside the restaurant to talk. Someone from one of the neighboring tables should have alerted the staff that she was disrupting everyone's dinner. Sometimes people like her need to be "shamed" into behaving correctly. I hope that guy dumped her by the way...

I think that's a good question. I believe it's very rude to chat on the phone especially when you're trying to do them a favor and they take your kindness for granted. Kick them out of the car, ha ha.. I work at a gas station and I don't speak to people who are to busy on their damn phone, to hell with them bastards. I work for Chevron too, they are strict but I dare them to fail my "secret survey" on their account of being rude. You just can't tell, but good question! But to answer your direct question, I don't really know, I think it's more of a personality thing rather than a cell phone. I remember when cell phone's became popular (affordable) and I'm only 19 years old. Think about it, someone you knew before and as they came out, how did it change them? Just gave them an opportunity to tune out their surroundings probably talking to their self ha ha

I think social rules are constantly changing with the internet, cell phones, and email.
I think its rude to interrupt a conversation by answering your cell phone (unless its an emergency) or to let people hear your own phone calls. Aside from that, its your own space.

Cell phones do not make people rude. It's the people themselves who may have already been jerks, and their attitude while on the phone increases their as$ holeness.

Cell phones do not make people rude. The people ARE rude, and the phones are just the medium through which we discover their flaw.

I'd say no, because they aren't typically talking for the sake of being rude, they're just focused on the call, and so ignore their surroundings (including the people around them.)
