They don't. That is simply the opinion of the person writing the answer. Personally, I don't follow traditions unless I made them for me. As for weddings, I know a lot of people who did NOT follow tradition and they were and still are very happy about the choices they made. Traditions are something you need to decide on for yourselves and if you don't like them, don't use them. I know of a lot of couples who refuse to use the word 'obey' in their ceremony and as a result, it is rarely used now. Personal preferences are the best traditions you can follow. Good question!!

Religiously speaking, if traditions are not adhered to then the union is not truly holy. How much flex there is in the tradtion depends on how rigid and conservative you are.
Tradition can also mean alot to someone: think about it . . . a great deal of who you are is based on what you were taught and how you were raised. A lot of people were raised and taught based on family/cultural/etc. tradition . . . therefore, it is understandable why people who realize how important tradition is to their identity would be so adament about honoring that tradition on one of the happiest days on their lives. Also, if your chosen spouce was not raised based on similar traditions, insisting on your tradition's wedding ideals may be subconsciously forcing said tradition upon your partner.
There are also wives tales and superstisions (often originating with the Religion and many old cultures' inherent need to uphold its rules) that state doing something one way will bring ill fortune while doing it another way will bring luck, or something specific like health, money, or friendship.

Maybe simply coz weddings are family-and-friends (even community) gathering event. People think weddings 'need' to be done perfectly (for the sake of the hosts) to show the best of everyone. 'Perfect' can be achieved by reprising tested-and-approved-to-be-working practices, which is a.... tradition.

That person must live in the dark ages.
Tradition does NOT need to be followed with anything unless YOU want to follow it.

there are beliefs in that tradition. they say that if you don't follow it, something bad will happen or befall the married couple. there is no scientific proof actually that it is true but what the heck! let's just follow. nothing's wrong with that anyway.
