i don't think it's the dirty litterbox thing, cause i don't clean it every day anyway. i read somewhere that cats aren't smart enough to issue poop punishment. but i'm not convinced- i really think my cat is either crying out for help, or this is passive-aggressive behavior for being left alone.
second question: how do i make it stop? he is one year old and neutered, if it matters.

~Definitely punishment.. lol The idea of putting the litter box where he usually goes is a good idea.~

Uh---HELLO--- this is a behavior issue. This cat is a very spoiled "Mommy's baby", and he gets mad at you when you go off and leave him alone. Cats are so darned smart that he KNOWS that this is the fastest way to get your attention---good or bad--it's attention.

In order to get him to stop this, you can do one of 2 things: (a) scold him and let him know what a "bad boy" he's been, then ignore him for several hours (regardless of how much he begs for his "Mommy---put him in a room alone, if you must. Or--(b) pick up the "poopies", clean the area, and go on about your business just like nothing out of the usual happened. If he sees he's NOT getting the attention from this action, it will stop---albeit, he MAY decide on another one, like urinating right in the middle of your sofa, or whatever he can think of. But, this is strictly a behavior issue---demanding your attention. Best of luck to you and this "Spoiled brat".

Have you ever noticed that right after you clean their litter box they jump in it? Goodness, girl, give it clean litter. Put it in a room without carpet. Clean off everything cause they will clean it off for you while you're gone. Once a cat soils in an area, they will constantly go back to that area.

Change the atmosphere, don't allow it in that area. Change the litter.

Mad, cause your gone. Leave out some toys w/catnip and some other playthings, strings around doorknobs & chairs. Brown paper bags w/holes. Waded up paper to bounce around. They have those new mice toys out that move when touched. Leave drawers open so they explore. Get another cat? LOL Good Luck

Bright or not, it sounds like he is punishing you."I'll show you for leaving me!" or maybe he has separation anxiety. I wonder if you got him a companion cat if that would help. Then he wouldn't be so lonely.

Other than that, I don't know how to stop it. Maybe your vet has a clue.
