Don't confuse the two by asking which is more important. At the low end of the IQ scale, EQ is likely to be very limited. The fact that those with Down's Syndrome can be very friendly is proof of low EQ, because it leaves them defenseless. At the high end however, the two seem independant. How are you going to define EQ? There are those who can manipulate others because they have a facility to recognize their emotional weaknesses. That does not make them good people; quite the opposite. In the extreme, it's the hallmark of a psychopath. Is EQ the ability to feel or the ability to manipulate around feelings? Why?

IQ has been widely dismissed as a measure of intellect in recent years, because the vast majority of IQ tests focus on elements of logic such as perception, spatial relations and, in particular, the ability to recognize patterns. This is why individuals with certain varieties of autism who may not be considered intelligent by society may recieve phenomenal IQ scores. IQ tests in and of themselves are not useless, but they are certainly not by a long shot the be all and end all of how we define intelligence. Emotional intelligence (by the way, the word you're looking for is "quotient" not "quotation") is arguably more applicable in today's society, because EQ focuses on a different level of functionality. The same person with autism who may recieve a very high IQ score would undoubtedly recieve a much lower EQ score. Ideally, EQ and IQ are on a fairly level playing field and when put together can be a reliable measure of one's intelligence and it's application in their life.

I don't think EQ is more important than IQ; they are complementary. We need a head to think with, but we need a heart to feel with. To be whole human beings both sides of our nature needs to be developed.

EQ has to do with knowing how to relate to people, knowing how to communicate and be with them. You could say those with EQ are "People Smart." Whereas those with high IQ often times, but not limited to are "Book Smart."

So my answer is both EQ and IQ are important and necessary for us to live healthy and happy lives.

EQ seems to have little scientific grounding, unlike IQ and so should be approached with caution. You might find this link useful reading
