I'm going to a funeral this week, and when I get nervous, I laugh. How can I prevent this laughing from happening?

First of all, laughter is not completely inappropriate at funerals. I have been to funerals where the mourners laughed as they shared humorous memories. My good friend put a number of jokes in her will and I really enjoyed reading them after she passed as it helped me to remember her sense of humor.

To help yourself be less nervous, perhaps you could visit the location of the funeral beforehand so you won't be in an unfamiliar place. Also, just remember that everyone there, like you, is there to remember the person you are mourning, so you have something in common. Funerals are a great place to catch up with family and friends as you share the occasion.

I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you have a good experience at the funeral.

Actually this is completely normal! Laughter in the face of sadness is something that effects nearly 40 percent of humans. I am one of them! When I was a child I would sit and giggle at funerals of family members but not because I was happy, but because I didn't know what else to do. When I lost my Grandfather, I laughed so hard I wet myself! I was seven years old at the time. My mother understood so I was never punished but the looks I received from the people around us could have killed! lol
I have long since out grown this problem, but every once in awhile it does re-surface. I have had to force myself to bite my lip or carry a pin. If biting my lip doesn't help I poke the palm of my hand with the pin! I never do it hard enough to bleed, just enough to remind myself not to laugh!
Good Luck Little One I'm sorry for your loss!
Blessed Be

Sit towards the back if you start feeling like laughing slip out the door and calm yourself. Many people leave in the middle of a funeral because they are upset and if that is the way you express it nobody is going to even notice.

If you laugh, simply explain it like you just did to us. You're not the only one who laughs. They'll understand.
