I'm surprised that so many people here cannot tell the difference! Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans DO look different, and they can tell one another apart (occasionally mistakes are made).

It is very difficult to explain the differences, though. To truly see the difference, you simply need to have enough exposure to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean people. I'll try to explain some...

For Koreans, I think it is the nose that distinguishes them best. There is a shape that is not really found in China or Japan. In regards to physique, there are more muscular Korean men on average than Japanese men. Korean women tend to have larger breasts (once again, on average) than Japanese women.

Chinese often appear to have more round (not fat!) faces than Japanese.

I think the nose is a very distinguishing feature, but it is really the combination of nose, eyes, and other facial features. It is difficult to describe, because usually, you need to see the entire face to clearly tell the difference. Physique is not a very good indicator. It is definitely a facial difference.

Asians too have difficulty figuring out a German from a Brit or American from looks alone (whites).

Quite difficult even for Asians to differentiate the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans from facial features per se because the 3 races share many cultural similiarities.

I am an overseas born Chinese but even in S E Asia many would think I'm Japanese or a Hong Kong or Taiwan Chinese. Some Chinese will kill me when I say that YOUNG Japanese and S Koreans are much better looking than Chinese generally.... i-n-co--m-i-n-g..........

I can, but not all. For example, I can distinguish between Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos and Singaporeans, but I can't always tell the difference between Malaysians and Singaporeans. Thais and Vietnamese confuse me a little until I hear them speak. I use speech, accent and facial features to tell them apart. (: I guess it's easier for Asians to tell apart other Asians.

It will not be easy as the Japanese and Koreans were descendants of Chinese origins. So you will find similar features among the 3 nationalities.

Same as the Malay stock of Asia. They can be found today in diverse countries like Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and other Asia Pacific regions.

And you Caucasians will all look alike to us, Asians.

It is very difficult to distinguish because they are alike each other, just like being American, Canadian, and English or Australian !

I think some knowledge about those countries, people, languages, life style etc will be very helpful for you to understand. For example, I am a Japanese, living North America for a long time, and it is fairly easy for me to tell who is American, Canadian and European, as well as who is Japanese and non-Japanese Asian without talking with them. I found people in each region often posses unique atmosphere, choice of colour of their clothing, body language. However, my family member in Japan have no idea to tell who is English, Italian, or Jewish !!

I read an article regarding physical characteristic among those 3 . Chinese people's skin tends to be yellowish than Japanese and Korean, and many of whom have double eye lid with relatively larger eye. Often Northern China region people are tall and slim. Koreans skin are either dirk-yellow or very white dewy, baby skin, and their eyes are very thin and small. Korean tends to be larger and taller among the three. Japanese looks like they are mixed of those people.

i would say nose,
typical japanese nose is very difference from typical chinese but still similar to korean.
then look at the eyes, chniese eyes look difference than japanese but close to korean.

for woman, you can just look at the make up. the style and the way they make up their face is very difference in this 3 countries.

and for woman, you can some time tell from legs. chinese and korean have tinner legs than the japanese.

anyway, only looking, will be very hard to say for sure who is who.

It is the eyes that I usually determine who is who. Japanese people has slender and soft eyes. It is almost like a straight line. I sometimes mistaken Japanese men as women. Chinese has wider eyes. Korean? Cant distinguish them since they basically look like Chinese and part Japanese.
