Hello. I am just learning to become an artist. This is the first large piece I have painted and have only been painting around a year. This is a painting of my horse that I own. I want your honest opinion. The white part is an odd shape, because it is shaped that way in real life. Go ahead and be honest, but don't go off and be sure rude. I am new at this and just want some sort of feedback. I don't want to sell them or anything...I just want to know if they are good enough to be displayed in a home. Thanks for your help. If they link does't work, I will fix it...sorry. I am also new at adding the image links. For reference, I am age 26.

1 to 5

1=pretty good
5=don't waste my time anymore

Also please keep in mind, i am just doing this to fill free time. I am not claiming to be the next Picaso or anything. I am just keeping them for myself.

yeah, up to this point, I have only painted cartoons. This is the first live subject and I am having trouble making it three dimensional. All told, I have only painted 4 things.

Don't worry about how long you have been painting, it's more the number of paintings done. It's about practice and seeing. You're doing fine. Do more... lots more!
If you want to be 'good' then read and look at other's work. Make a note of the work you like and see if you can tell why. Separate the emotion from the technique... you can learn technical tricks from work you don't really like and apply it to stuff that makes a real connection. There's plenty of free tutorials on line as well.
The comment about your age is accurate... but don't be discouraged! Most people stop drawing around age 12 or 13 and so their development stops there. When you take it up in later life where else would you expect to start from? I teach this stuff, and it's the most common thing you hear; "I can't draw" or "I can't paint". What they mean is "I can't draw the way I think I should be able to at my age".
It all comes back to practice. You have a good eye, and a love for the subject. Just keep doing it!

Your subject lacks depth in more ways than one. It looks a little two-dimensional, and it isn't very captivating. My eyes are immediatly drawn toward the odd shape of the white spot, which also serves to make the horses head appear mis-shapen. Also, unless you're not aiming for realism, it's a little too heavy on the black outline. What you see in nature is rarely ever a black outline. Otherwise, the overall anatomy of the horse and the attention to details are great. You will get better. I'd give it a 3 in your rating scale. If you're doing it in your free time, then just have fun. It's a great way to meditate.

Painting is tough. I recommend getting Corel Painter IX and a Wacom tablet. That way, you can practice practice practice without making a mess, and you can undo mistakes.

It's not bad for a novice. You are starting out and I have 25 years on you in age and have been drawing and painting for most of that(started drawing at age two, or three I think)so I've been at it awhile and still not always happy with my work(but that's me). The big question is: Do you like it and does it make you happy? If you just intend to display them in your home that's all that matters.

I think that for your 4th painting; it is great. If you are not trying to display your work in a gallery or sell it, then don't worry about what other people think of it. If your art is for you, then all that matters is that it makes you happy. I think your painting is great and the more you paint the better you will get.

Well... right up until I read the part about you being 26 I was going to say that I thought it was wonderful, but that was when I thought you were like 12. Sorry.
BUT - if you like to paint and it makes helps you relax and feel good, then do it!!! Don't let what anybody says here steel your joy!

Hi! I'm in the same situation as you are, because I'm studing arths and I know that some times it's not easy to draw or paint right at the beginning.
Keep trying you will get it right thats what I allways think. ^__^

It's definately a start. You keep painting and you'll get better. Check out Bob Ross when you can. He rocks!

I love it! The love you feel for the animal shows in the picture. Keep painting, and I think it will make you happy and people will love your work. :)
