I am going away for about 2 1/2 weeks.

My dog requires medication at 8am and 8pm. This is not flexible. The cheapest boarding kennel I can find is $15/day. I would also need (a neighbour?) to feed other pets.

Would it be reasonable to save myself some money and earn my brother some money, by offering him $10/day to housesit?

My brother is 19 and lives at home with our mother. He is studying but not employed. He would be required to feed the dog, rabbit and fish; and maybe open bills to check if they are due before I get back. I would not expect him to pay those bills or do any housework other than clean up after himself.

I think that would be fine. I have taken care of my sisters animals many times while they have gone on vacation for free, so I don't think paying your brother $10 a day would be a bad deal for him. Plus, if he lives with his mom, he will probably enjoy having a house to himself for a few weeks. And, it will be an extra $170 or $180 for him.

If you really can't afford more than 10$/day, then yes, of course. However, if you can, he's your brother for god's sake, you could at least give him those 15$/day. It'd be silly to pay a boarding kennel so much money, but your bro is surely worth it. I have a kid brother and I wouldn't hesitate to find a pretext to help him, especially if he's studying - that is, again, if I had those money :D.

edit: yeah, JJ, he should want to do it for free too, and he'd refuse to receive the money. We might have to fight for it :).

You would be absolutely insane to allow your brother to housesit for you. Trust me, I've been there...any person at that age would immediately invite all his friends over and have a party. $10 a day is a little mean, make it $20 I would think...

Completely reasonable! He'd love to have a place to himself for 2.5 weeks ... just make sure you trust him enough not to throw a party and trash your house!
