What is going on in America? It is amazing and disturbing, to ride on a road and see street signs that are printed not only in English, but in other languages as well. What's more, even legal documents are now being written in foreign languages. How unnerving to walk down an American street and not understand what people are talking about. Maybe this isn't America. I feel like a stranger in my own land. Why don't they learn to speak English?

You'd probably think this is someone who shares your views on America today with all the people from different countries.

Actually this is expressed by Benjamin Franklin in the 1750s and he is talking about the German, Polish, Italian and Dutch.

For those who give a hard time to today's immigrants: Most likely your people weren't welcome in this country, but they came here for better opportunities. Even if they wouldn't have a great life, they'd give their future generations a chance to succeed.

Rich A, thanks for actually reading the question. And I understand frustration about illegal immigration but don't understand HATRED towards certain immigrants who came to do no harm, and who weren't OUT to break laws, those who would just risk anything to be here. I'm not saying they didn't break laws or that they are all good people. You can't tell if someone is illegal by looking at them, yet they might still be treated bad.

The question is NOT the issue of immigration because we are a nation of immigrants. More talent, intelligence, ingenuity, in most areas of culture, commerce, politics & society itself has been due to immigrants who have come to our shores to make our nation a better place to live. The main issue is ILLEGAL immigration. That is the primary problem today. With external threats being made against us, it is very necessary that we shore up our boundaries, and enforce laws regarding illegal practices of immigration. That is not a racist policy or one of ignorance or intolerance. We welcome political refugees from all nations yearning for freedom and opportunity. It just has to be done in an orderly manner. Ensuring our security is the first priority our government should have to protect us. Immigrants come here, too, for their own safety from foreign dictatorships and violence from war. My ancestors are Scotch-Irish dating back from the days of William Wallace. They stood in line at Ellis Island to register before making their way into America to take advantage of freedom & opporutnity. Your ancestors probably came the same route. We did it the right way. Newcomers should, too. To Mr. Franklin, I would say that diversity is healthy, and is not a threat to our country. Let's just do it the right way.

You know what? I love the way you put this question because Even though i am an immigrant myself i understand your frustration. I don't think that people who just hate immigrants are very fair.

Like my case: My parents brought me here when i was 6 months old. I was raised here and in essence AM an american. I wish people would think before they spoke sometimes. I understand your frustration becasue i agee they need to learn english if they are going to come here. But this world isn't perfect and truthfully it will by far get much worse before it gets better, but ii have the hope that God has given me of a world much better than this.

In 1998 my ex husband and I decided it was time for a change. We wanted to be able to give more to our children. He was American,I am British. I wanted to move to France, I love the place and speak pretty good French, my ex, on the other hand spoke no French. We went to France on numerous occasions and he just couldn't grasp it. So, common sense prevailed and we moved to America. We could have, at the time, lived in any of the 3 countries mentioned, but , we believed that it was wrong to live in a country and expect everyone there to pander to us, non French speaking immigrants! I truely beleive that if you move to a forgien country, you MUST assimilate, that does not mean you forget your roots, don't practice you religion nor speak your native tongue at home! This is a country of immigrants, always has been, always will be, but, us immigrants have an obligation to live AMERICAN lives, not to make AMERICA become our country of origin, to expect America to change into a spanish/french/german etc etc etc speaking land.

Every foreigner learns to speak English in their country because they want to. Those who do not, expect the U.S. to always be tolerant and go out of our way for them coming here.

No, this isn't MY country or MY land any more and I've grown very tired of the politcal correctness. I'm not a politician...and that expression is meant for them. I still have freedom to speak my piece. They come to this land looking for favor...and freedom. But will their children and their childrens children fight for the US against the peoples and lands they just left??? Don't kid yourself.

Please watch this video of an interview with three former terrorists. It was on CN8 morning show from New Jersey. You'd better get educated before it's too late. After seeing this and finding out what America is up against, you will understand.

ALL illegal aliens are breaking the law.
The first law they break is when they enter the USA illegally.
Illegals continue to break a multitude of laws every day they stay on US soil illegally.
Why aren't YOU worried about global warming?
One of the major causes of global warming is overpopulation, an overproduction of pollution caused by overpopulation.
Why don't you understand that when nations (like Mexico) overproduce their population, out of ignorance, when they cannot feed the children they produce, and then export that poverty stricken population to a neighboring country(USA) to support, to overpopulate the neighboring nation with poor needy foriegners who make too many babies, that is a mitigating factor in the production of greenhouse gasses which results in global warming.
You want to do something about global warming? Get involved in educating third world nations about the necessity of birth control.

I love Legal immigrants, Illegals should go home. My great-grandparents came here legally & so did my grandpa, it's not that hard! I am so tired of people whinning because they can't come here tomorrow. We have to check you out & make sure that you are who you say you are and that you actually can support yourself. This takes time. God Bless Ben Franklin, the dirty old man had the right idea.

English must be used in all official transactions and public signages so that there will be uniformity since majority of Americans know the language. Let the foreigners who just comprise a small fraction of the population learn the English language.

yes, i see how fustrating you might feel. Now imagine what the native americans felt and still feel when all this immigrants and generations of immigrants like you claim this land as theirs and see other immigrants who are here for the same reasons your immigrant anscestors came to steal this land from the native americans. If you're talking about a national language everybody living in america should speak, that would be all of the native american tongues. Don't you agree?
