Hi there- I've found that if I take a natural diet supplement called Melatonin, it really makes you fall asleep, and the plus side is that you don't experience any of the groggy feelings you might get from over the counter sleep medications. Those contain an antihistimine (like Benadryl) that also helps you to sleep but can make you feel groggy the next day. I like to do some stretching excercises before I go to bed, and take a hot bath to loosen up my muscles. The best thing that works for me is turning off the t.v. and lights and reading with a little booklight. Good luck!

It can be different for different people, but some things to consider follow. (Take what you can use- ignore the rest!)
Stop drinking anything caffeinated in the afternoon and evening. This includes coffee, soft drinks, tea, etc. No Excedrin, either! It contains caffeine!
Be careful about medications you take. If you take Nyquil for more than 3 nights, for example, it can cause you to fall asleep, but you'll find you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep.
Don't drink too much alcohol! Weirdly enough, it can do just what Nyquil does- it helps you fall asleep but prevents you from staying asleep.
Don't eat in the 1-2 hours before bed time. Sometimes digestion or indigestion can keep you wakeful
Be sure to get plenty of physical exercise each day. If you haven't been active you may have more trouble sleeping.
Don't watch exciting TV shows just before bed time.
Get into a routine that you do every day at bed time to let your body know it's time to sleep.
Take a warm bath just before bed time.
Do not watch TV in bed.
Do not listen to music when you're trying to fall asleep.
Believe it or not, sometimes going to bed earlier can help you sleep better. We produce melatonin in our bodies each day and if we push ourselves past the time when the melatonin is effective by staying online all night or partying or whatever, by the time we get in bed our bodies are in a different cycle.
Just stay in bed if you can't sleep. Seriously. People say to get up if you can't sleep, but just stay in bed. Let your body know this is the time you are in bed, and day is for being out of bed... which brings me to...
Don't take a nap, no matter how short. While you're still sleep deprived from insufficient sleep at night this may be a challenge, but tough it out and stay awake during the day.
If you get too tired in the daytime, consider meditating. It doesn't seem to screw with your sleep patterns the way naps can, but it is very restorative for many people.
Keep something somewhat dull beside your bed to read when you're sleepless.
Make sure your room is dark at night, and light in the day. IF there's a way to let light come in through your windows in the morning it can help your body get into its natural wake-sleep rhythm.
If you have a partner, have sex just before sleep. (Or if you don't have a partner!)
If you like and can tolerate milk, a glass of milk before bedtime can help.
A dose of melatonin, available over the counter, can help some people if taken an hour before bedtime.
Use a white noise machine or a fan to produce white noise- this is a dull hum to help block out other noises in the house or outside.

take vitamin C in the morning -- not after noon. Get an air purifier and put it close to your bed. No coffee. Reduce sugar intake. Drink plenty of water. Don't eat much before going to bed.
