I have a few questions. Firstly, how long is it alright for them to be by themselves for? And I mean rarely- normally they will have attention, but I'm thinking of the future if I'm away for a few days. If I'd be away for 1 or 2 days, is simply making sure there is a lot of water and food in the cage ok? Will they be fine with no interaction for that time period? When does it go from leaving some food and water to needing to give it to someone to care for? I'd guess 2-3 days?

Now if I had to leave for let's say a week, and there's no friends or family that could care for it, what are my other options? Are there any services that will watch a bird for you? Or what else can you do?

No don't leave your pet alone for more than two days. They have no logic and cannot figure out.. if I eat all the seeds today and throw them on the floor.. nobody will be here to give me more.. now do they understand .. if I splash my water all over.. someone will not be here to replace it. (bored pets do things they don't usually do and if its destructive or wasteful they usually do more of it).

I love pet sitting for people who have animals that they don't want uprooted and want them to stay in their own home while the owner is away. Maybe you can find a good house/pet sitter. Wish I was in your town. :)

Try the yellow pages, the pet groomer, and the pet feed store. Even the vet might give you the name of a bird lover who might take in a roomer for a week. Now this is thru experience... look for a bird club in your area.. those people might be able to find you somebody with a lot of experience, to care for your pet. You might even get interested in belonging to the club. Good luck with your feathered friend.

I wouldn't leave a bird for more than 24 hours myself because although lots of people don't seem to realize it, birds are actually pretty social animals and they get depressed without interaction, which could lead to medical problems.

Your options are a boarding kennel, or see if a friend or family member would be willing to watch the bird(s) for you. They should be willing to feed and water the bird(s) as necessary, watch for behavior changes or obvious physical problems, and they should commit to interacting with your birds frequently throughout the day -- they don't have to *handle* the birds, just talk to them.

It is NEVER ok to leave any bird unattended for a couple of days at a time. Your local pet shop or vet can board the birds for you and the cost is usually minimal.
Far too much can go wrong and if you leave the bird(s) alone for long periods of time, it can actually be fatal for them.
