I personally do not soak any dry beans. I get great results every time. But I have time to cook them for a few hours.
If you have time to cook them a long time and want nice thick juice in your beans.
Boil them hard for the first hr or so. Make sure you do not drain them dry. Keep water just over the beans. Do not add salt until the beans are done. After you've boiled them hard for an hr or so turn them down to medium and watch them for another hr. When the beans get tender run your big spoon around the edge of the pot to smush just some of the beans. Boiling them hard and smushing some of them gets the juice nice and think for more flavor.
Sorry I didn't really answer your question.

I normally soak them for 24 hrs. I then boil them till tender and drain (save 1 or 2 cups of the juice).
I then chop up some onion, garlic, chilli, cabannossi and bacon and fry.
I then toss in the beans and mix the whole lot. Pour in the juice and keep on heat for another 10 minutes.
Put your portion on a plate and smother in tomato sauce (ketchup).
As an alternative you can also add smoked bacon bones.
WARNING. Make sure not to catch a crowded train the following day, and if you work in a crowded office, eat these on a Friday night.

I cover red beans in water, boil and let it stay overnight. The next morning it gets boiled again for about an hour. Get this: do not put salt or salty things before beans get soft despite what other packets instruct.

Soaking overnight is the preferred method, but you can also try boiling them for an hour and then letting them steep in the liquid for several hours before cooking them.

Most people will tell you that they need to be soaked overnight but in reality they only have to soak for about an hour.
It certainly does not hurt to soak them longer.
Soaking for less time only means you have to cook them longer.
