Some doctors claim that 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. I've never had a problem with my weight, but I have seen a lot of overweight people, especially at all-you-can-eat buffets. I think some of the problem with a person being overweight is genetic, but I also think Americans consume too much whole milk and soft drinks. Exercise is constantly promoted as the way to reduce body fat, but I never exercise. I think exercise is being promoted to keep fitness centers in business. Do you consider yourself to be overweight?

There is no need to constantly exercise to stay healthy. I know that for a fact because I seldom ever exercise, and I can do 30 sit-ups or 30 push-ups without having to take a break. Then, I can rest for about 5 to 7 minutes, and I can do 30 more.

I'm obese, but just barely. I think a lot of it is genetics, too. My mother's side of the family is mostly overweight, my aunt was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer (which partially accounts for her being overweight) but just because you have the gene, doesn't mean it's impossible for you to stay smaller. With a strict diet, and exercise, you'll be able to lose and maintain, whether or not you have a gene for it.
Exercise is a BIG part of losing weight, and maintaining a healthy weight. You need to burn more calories then you consume daily, to lose weight, and you need to at least exercise some, to maintain a healthy weight. I was always smaller, and stuff, but I switched from diet soda, to normal soda, and I never exercised. I gained 30 lbs easily, and now I quit drinking regular soda (and trying to cut back on it altogether) and am eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising at least 4 times a week. I've already lost 10 lbs, and will hopefully get back to a BMI of 22.
But yes, I am overweight.

You may not be overweight but if you never exercise you may not be fit or healthy. It takes a combination of exercise and diet to reduce body fat. Basically the more calories you consume the more you need to burn. If there is not a deficit you will not loose weight. I am overweight, I am trying to loose the excess. I workout 5 times per week, a combination of cardio and ressistance training and I keep a diary of the food I eat and drink as I find this makes me more aware of what I eat and accountable for what I eat. I am halfway to my goal weight but aside from reducing body fat I have increased muscle, increased bone density and greatly improved my cardiovascular fitness. All this equals better sleep, the ability to play with my kids and keep up! increased energy, improved memory recall and reduced risk of heart disease and osteoperosis.... the list goes on.

You think exercise is being promoted to keep fitness centers in business? Not quite. Most people don't go to fitness centers when they work out. It's not necessary. But to answer the question: I don't consider myself overweight. My BMI is towards the top of the healthy range, however, so I'd like to lose a little bit just to look better and feel more confident in myself.

I am 5'4 and 105 pounds, and I'm 25. I'm not overweight.
Exercise is not just for reducing body fat. It's for overall health. And weight is NOT genetics

I am 50 lbs overweight and my problem is stress and I inheirited my fat gene from my mom. i don't think she wants me to be happy and lose the weight because she sabotages me and gives me no other choice but to eat the fast food she buys. she also stresses me out cuz i am 12 and she give me work to do when i have already fallen asleep, tell me to clean up and cook for my siblings who are older then me. that makes no sense because 1 doesn't go to school and sleeps all day and the other on goes to school 3 hours at nite but sleeps all day.
its hard because i am 12 and have to manage the house a lot. my mother has never said thank you just she snaps on me everyday. i have even given up presents on christmas for the past three years.
I CAN NEVER EXERCISE BECAUSE SHE BUGS ME AND MY DAD FINALLY GAVE ME THE PERMISSION TO IGNORE MY MOTHER WHEN I EXERCISE........MY DAD SEES WHAT SHE IS DOING BUT HE TOLD ME JUST TO IGNORE HER BECUZ HE KNOW SHE IS GIVING ME TROUBLE.
