they think they are above the law... or they look old so they shouldn't have to hassle with it. we have to do it if the person looks under 30 here in NH, however when i worked at wal-mart (recently) most of us as cashires were checking everyone. and I personally think you need to, my friend "jack" went to applebees and asked for a martini last yr and got one, then he asked if the waitress wanted to see his ID and she said no, i know you are old enough, you look atleast 25... jack is 19! so i understand the laws. even though our line was at 30 i stopped at if they looked 55 or older just to be sure, but i didn't think it was fair that when a woman who was still walking and looked in good health but very old wipped out her ID b/c everyone else made her show it, i mean come on, the woman was born in 1902! there should be some limits... but i'm rambling on now so to get back to your question people are stupid about IDS because this way of checking IDs has not been around forever, I think people are pissed ath the government for changin the laws around over and over and they are taking their frusturations out on you instead of where they should.

I have seen several folks do it myself. I'm not sure why people get so upset, because they think they are above a cashier at a grocery store and they are being "inconvenienced" for the extra few seconds it takes to get out their drivers license.
Personally me, I never have a problem because I know it's part of the job and a requirement for me if I want to take that 6 pack home. I guess also I was in a position to ask for Id's on a daily basis and I dealt with a lot of people who thought they were special and above showing an ID card. I made their day easy when I called their supervisor and told them they refused to show an ID. I know you can't do that but I feel your pain.

I know what you mean; I work at Kmart, and people always get mad whenever I card them, too. I think they think we are accusing them of lying, or something about their age, so it ticks them off. It's pretty ridiculous. Sometimes, I just think, "Well, if you were mature enough to be drinking, you wouldn't be making such a big deal about me carding you, which makes you seem IMmature." We are also supposed to card everyone in a group if they look younger than 27. If one person doesn't have an ID, we can't give them the alcohol because if they get hurt, we get charged for it. So I have had people yell at me for that, too. It's all just a humongously stupid deal, I wouldn't even be too concerned with it. People are dumb and get mad for dumb reasons. Welcome to retail. =]

Usually it's because people who are likely to drink regularly are the type who don't want other people to know about it, or alternately don't like to be hassled at all. Sometimes it's because the buyer is underage, but that's kind of rare. Most underage drinkers have other ways to score booze.
Myself, I rarely drink, but when I do purchase alcohol, I'm fine with showing my ID. I kind of expect it and usually have it out waiting.

I only get pissed (at myself) when I forget my ID in the car and have to go run out and get it. I don't know why people get mad. If it is the law in your state then they should be aware of it and know that they must present ID to purchase alcohol. Next time some one throughs a fit, point to the sign. If they continue, suggest that they talk to their local congress person about getting the law changed.

hmmm well, i'm from quebec were the legal age is 18 and i'm now 21 and i sometimes get annoyed just because its been three years and well its annoying to look underage, but i usually have my card out waaay in advance and most places have signs that they'll card you if you look anywhere under 25 just to make sure. Now, i'm assuming they're getting mad just because of the trouble of getting out the card and stuff, but i don't know it bothers me now but if they're still carding me when i'm thirty i'm gonna be really happy that i still look young. Then i went to Europe and no one ever asked for any ID lol. plus if you're making a big deal its like either the person must be underage because they aren't showing you their id, or they just like wasting time

I'm 24 years old...and people have always assumed I was older than I was. I know it's dumb but I used to get offended when people DIDNT ask for my I.d. I appreciate it when people ask for my i.d..I dont think its that hard to take 3 seconds to pull it out of my purse. After all I know theyre just doing their job. Maybe the people you're dealing with have short fuses and really dont need to be adding alcohol to that...

I honestly feel for you. I live in NM, and it's a law here too. If people started raising hell, I'd get their liquor, put it behind the counter and say, NEXT!" Don't know if you could do that or if you dare, but your manager should back you up on that. You (your business) has the right to refuse service to anyone.
P.S. Don't even worry about it. That's your job, your livelihood. If they don't want to ablige, then they can try to score liquor somewhere else (where I'm sure they'll get carded!!!)

Next they will have us walking a straight line out of the store;check us into their own "Super-Re-habmart" if failed this test. And probably you will need to have a card punched, located behind the counter, for anything other than lite beer before 5 Oclock. After which you will have to prove you work 40 hours, and promise your first born as collateral if you do not have proper ID.Cheers..

I know people can be "difficult", but come on!!
Wow!! I can only wonder why?
Personally, I love being asked for my ID!
And I'm not old!! :)
This is difficult to answer...
I can only suspect you live in a "college town" which
must "border" a High School"!!!
Honestly, most people do not mind being "carded".
The one's that treat you this way... must be retarded!!
(Or Drunk!!)
Good Luck!!
