Because originally the Kingdom of God represented a state of conscious perception. It was the Christian equivalent of Nirvana, or Enlightenment, and was achieved through a very specific set of meditative practices. This concept is still prominant in Eastern Orthodox Christianity - you can read all about it in the four-volume set called the "Philokalia," available in the Christianity section of your local Borders.
