My cat is 12.5 years old and he is overweight. I have noticed lately that he doesnt jump that much anymore, I dont think he could even jump onto my bed. He can jump on my couch with a struggle. He also waddles now and he has been drinking lots of water lately. Does it sound like he has diabeties? How can I test him without bringing him to the vet, the ride there would really frighten him and my vet killed my last cat, they were greedy and have been known to do operations or leave things in animals when not needed to make extra money. My cat seems very healthy and happy besides everything else does anyone know if this sounds like diabeties?

Older, overweight cats are at high risk for diabetes, but there is no way for you to test for that at home. The at home testing monitors they make for people are not accurate for pets, and even if you could test him if he is diabetic you will need insulin which you can only get through your vet. Have you noticed an increase in how much he drinks? You really should get him in to have bloodwork checked, if you dont like or trust your vet, than find another. Its much better to find out while your cat is still relatively healthy, most times owners arent aware the cat is diabetic until it goes into a crisis of too high blood sugar, and then they have to be hospitalized for several days. You should also start him on a diet, find a senior weight loss formula food, and measure out portioned meals for him (instead of letting him eat as much as he wants). Be aware that if he is a diabetic, than deciding for treatment will be a big commitment, both finacially and involvement wise.

You really do need to take your cat to the vets, not necessarily the one you currently go to as they sound like the spawn of the devil but please find a different vet clinic in your area as there isn't an accurate way to home test your kitty for diabetes. My cat is diabetic and he's certainly got a 'waddle' and on bad days drinks a heck of a lot of water. please don't make the mistake I did by not taking action immediately, your kitty could end up ketoacidosis and very poorly. my little one is fine now, but quick action is needed and a lot of commitment from you to ensure your cat is as healthy as poss.
