I'm a free-lance photographer and I'm searching for a decent and affordable flash to use with my D200...
What would you recommend?

Depends, do you want the top of the line? I would get the SB-800 AF Speedlight from Nikon. Its the top of the line of Nikons flashes. Of course theres the SB600 but its doesnt reach as far as the 800 but if you dont need that extra few meters its fine.

I have the D80 and just bought the SB 400 because I don't do very much flash photography..but with the 200 you should get the best available matched flash meaning spend the little more and get the SB 800...it will synch best with your camera...allow wide range of applications in your shooting ....

I have to agree: Get the SB800 if you can swing it at all. If not, then the SB600. I wouldn't go to a third party flash, unless you are comfortable with manual flash, then maybe a nice Metz.
