The first King's Council was convened in the 12th century, it was called Parliament in the 13th century, these were unicamera institutions. The present bi-camera houses of commons and lords was formed in the 14th century.

The present site on the banks of the Thames has been occupied as a centre of government for over 1000 years. It was first occupied as a royal palace by Edward the Confessor in 1065 and Westminster Hall was built in 1097 (this is the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster).

In October 1834 the Palace of Westminster was almost completely destroyed by a fire, the only part left standing was the Westminster Hall, St Stephen's Chaple crypt and the Jewel Tower.

The building seen today dates from the fire and was completed in 1070 thirty years after its commencement. In 1941 part of the Palace of Westminster was destroyed by a German bomb including both the House of Commons and the House of Lords were destroyed, the new houses being opened in 1950.

It is still a royal palace hence the name the Palace of Westminster.
