A NOTAM is a Notice to Airmen - the definition, from AIM section 5-1-3, Note 1: NOTAM information is that aeronautical information that could affect a pilot's decision to make a flight. It includes such information as airport or primary runway closures, changes in the status of navigational aids, ILS's, radar service availability, and other information essential to planned en route, terminal, or landing operations.

A good example of the an NOTAM would be if a runway is closed for construction.

Others here have defined what a NOTAM is but I'll add that there are different types of Notams.

There are notam l, notam d and notam fdc depending on what type of notam is being discussed.

Notam (d) is for dissemination of information on items such as runway closures, navigational facilities, and instrument approaches.

Notam (l) is to disseminate info locally on items such as taxiway closures, rotating beacon outages, factors that don't affect IFR approaches.

Notam (fdc) is to dissemination information that is regulatory in nature.

STands for Notice to Airmen - it's a special bulletin like "Atlanta's radar system is out untnil 3d PM" or "no aircraft within 50 miles of Cape Canaveral today" things like that. Pilots get told them when they check the weather before flying.

......... NOTICE TO AIRMEN .................. it gives all the information of any deficiency in navigation aids, terminal facilities out of service, change of route, any restriction on route or any information, when things have changed from normal, and is available at the briefing room while filing the flight plan with the ATC.
