First off, this is a forum based upon religion/spirituality. As such, we do have a right to come here to debate our point.
Secondly, a poll was done by the University of Minnesota within the last year that stated that Atheists were "the most mistrusted minority in the US." This is something that I will not accept. There is no empirical proof for the existence of any supernatural deity, but I do believe in stating my case.
As a minority in this country, we need to forward our position as it relates to other's beliefs. Is it merely a matter of hate, or a fundamental right to defend what someone believes in?
And please do answer this question.

Draws them where; to the Yahoo message board?
or more specfically to the religion and spiritualty section?
lol!!!
Atheists can still be "spiritual" even though they don't believe in Jesus.
However there may be some who deliberately wish to debate or disparage anothers opposite view.
It is apparent in cyberspace that many log on only to engage in negativity. As an example, note all of the posts which disparage Black Americans.
It seems disparaing others and their view point is a large part of what takes place on the www.

Who asks this question other than one who seeks to belittle all 'non-believers' by condemning acts of belittling? With that said, what constitutes a non-believer? Does this mean no faith in the 'scriptures' as the word of a god-object or no faith in divine understanding at all? It would seem your so-called faith is nothiing but a reaction against the world view of this phantom group of non-believers you have so conveniently created for the sake of your question. Your morals are derived from all that this 'non-believer' is not. Thus, this faith you flaunt like a diamond chain is of no substance because it is only a contrast of words used to better yourself in your own head.

WORMWOOD or Woodworm: why don't you take YOUR hateful self away and crawl back into the bigots slimepit you cometh from.
To the asker: atheism and hatred DO NOT co-exist easily together - one does not precurse the other. It is not the intention of atheists to belittle or patronize anymore than it is for Christain believers...there's no reason why believers and non-believers cannot co-exist side by side and engage in healthy, illuminating debate so long as both sides preach tolerance and mutual respect - and in the main, (aside from maniacs like wormwood) they do.

You ask a valid question, but I don't think you will get any resolution.
Not all non-believers who post to this Forum are hate-mongers. And some self-professed Christians seem to have left the love reservation when judging some of their responses. I will confine my remarks below only to those that act badly.
For these individuals, it is interesting and sad to see how some persons will behave when hiding behind the anonymity of the computer. As an "old guy" I have occasionally acted irresponsibly in my youth, so I can relate, but only up to a point. It is also readily apparent these persons would be ashamed if they knew their parents, husband, wife, children, etc., learned of what they write herein. They do their loved ones a disservice and dishonor them with such behavior.
The questions and answers one sees in this forum all too often represent a triumph of flippancy over rigor. These flippant persons that post obnoxious, vitriolic items obviously have not formally studied the matters being asked for several years. Rather they enjoy mockery and proving that they really have no value to add to the answer and too much wasted time on their hands. (This is one of the reasons I moderate an advanced theology forum on the internet so I can filter out the nonsensical.)
The scriptures speak of such persons:
2Ti 3:1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.
2Ti 3:2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,
2Ti 3:4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
2Ti 3:5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
For these reasons "...God gave them up to dishonorable passions." (Rom 1:26)
Hence, the best solution I can recommend for you is to ignore their vapid questions or comments. It is very easy to scan past them and focus your eyes on the substantive and cogent items. If you spend enough time in this Forum the persons prone to ill manners become known quickly, enabling the ignoring of their wasted efforts even easier.
Likewise, the questions are sometimes poorly formed or are laden with underlying bias that tells the reader that no cogent and rigorous answer will satisfy the asker.
In fairness, I am frequently embarrassed by other Christians' answers. I feel a sense of dismay over the obvious lack of deeper learning that is evident by many of the responses. Most seem to want to just fire off whatever pops into their heads, streams of consciousness, etc., with no evidence of reasoned arguments and synthesis of the issues. Some of the questions are often shallow or just asked for point building or something.
Unfortunately, many very good Christians have not spent enough time trying to learn and understand the theologies of the faith. Many also lack formal training in biblical hermeneutics, so they may misunderstand the full meanings of the texts they frequently quote.
I am not advocating that everyone get degrees in theology, only that they spend some time studying materials outside the scriptures so that their faith will be solidly grounded.
Those in this forum who are the rudest and most flippant, have not taken the time to seek formal learning of what they so easily espouse. They merely parrot back what they have heard or read without any synthesis of the issues.
The biblical doctrines tell us that all non-believers have their ability to properly reason clouded by the evil that entered the world at the Fall of mankind. Hence, atheist or whomever, I believe that those that are not among God's elect will be in an ever-present state of tension between what God has revealed to mankind and their desire to seek their own counsel.
Want another opinion why non-believers hang around this forum so much? See See Erika R's excellent and cogently written answer at the link below.
Just keep asking questions in an objective manner and you will sometimes get useful responses.

I do not believe in god, but I will never persecute you for your beliefs or try to push my own upon you, and I would expect the same respect from yourself. Not everyone who doesnt believe what you do is a bad person, I still have high morrallistic values and much respect for life in general. You should not be judging people on their beliefs, nor think you are better than they are because you believe differently

I dont come here because of hate, I dont hate religions i just go onto this section because some of the questions on here are asked to us and also we feel we need to correct these little notions that atheists are nothing but hate filled people who want to ridicule people.
Get your facts right before you say stuff like this.

Nope, we share the insights we have in a forum which was designed for that. Yahoo! Answers is for everyone and the Religion and Spirituality section has no exclusion anywhere which indicates atheists aren't welcome. So, just because you THINK that you have the divine right to dictate who should be in this public forum doesn't mean reality is going to follow you commands. If you want exclusivity, go to your church or join a private discussion group.

In a sense they are defending America from conservative Christians who:
1). want to rewrite the US Constitution in order to install to create an Old Testament-based fascist government;
2). want to force the teaching of their religious beliefs as science in public classrooms; and
3). place the law of their evil god above the system of the laws of man created by America’s Founding Fathers, and dictate the lives and behavior of everyone.
Conservative Christianity is a far greater threat to America than are foreign terrorists. If they would quit trying to force their way into the politics and public life of America, no one here or anywhere would pay them any attention.
